Yes, we now have our first Green councillor in Haringey!

On 10 April, voters went to the polls in St Ann’s ward in a by-election to elect a new representative, following the resignation of one of the incumbent Labour concillors. Having mounted an intensive campaign, with support from Greens from all over London, our candidate Ruairidh Paton knew that there was a chance of winning the seat. All indications were that we were running neck-and-neck with the new Labour candidate, possibly even enjoying a slight lead.

On election day itself, over 100 volunteers went out door-knocking, leafleting and counting off voters outside polling stations in a final push to get Ruairidh over the line. By the time the polls closed at 10:00 that evening, the campaign team had done everything possible to give Ruairidh a fighting chance of taking the seat. Now we had to wait for the votes to be counted at Haringey council offices the following morning.

In the event, it wasn’t even close. Out of a relatively high turn-out for a by-election of 28.8%, more than half of the 1,920 voters had chosen Ruairidh to be their new councillor. The Labour councillor was in a distant second place, 470 votes behind Ruairidh’s total of 1,059.

The final tallies were as follows:

  • Ruiaridh Paton (Green Party) – 1,069 votes
  • Stephen Tawiah (Labour) – 589 votes
  • Calum McGillivray (Conservative and Unionist) – 83 votes
  • David Beacham (Liberal Democrat) – 70 votes
  • David Stratford (Reform) – 69 votes
  • David Kaplan (Trade Union and Socialist) – 34 votes
  • Tony Hunt (Communist League) – 8 votes

Now that the celebrations have died down, looking at this result, one thing has now become abundantly clear – Greens can win in Haringey. Ruairidh has a lot of work ahead of him as the sole Green on a large council, but he is determined to fulfill his election promise of making a difference in St Ann’s, and is already dealing with residents‘ concerns.

As for the Haringey Green Party, we have a big year ahead, and we will be calling on members to support us as we look to have more Greens elected in Haringey in the 2026 local council elections. We are looking forward to seeing members engaging directly with residents, listening to their concerns and sharing the positive energy that Greens bring to campaigning.

If we can take a leaf out of the book that was so effectively used by Ruairidh and his dynamic campaign team, you will soon be reading about more Green Party success at the polls.

Please consider getting involved!

You’ve probably heard… A Labour Councillor in our target ward of St Ann’s has stepped down – giving us a huge opportunity to win a by-election on April 10th.

We’re delighted to introduce the candidate who’s going to take on Labour: Ruairidh Paton. Ruairidh has lived in Tottenham for five years and works with Green New Deal Rising – a youth climate group campaigning for a fairer, greener future.

In light of the by-election, we’ve paused the 2026 candidate selection process until after April 10th. However, the nomination period remains open so anyone can still put themselves forward, and we’ll share revised timetable soon.

I’m really grateful for the chance to be a strong voice for St Ann’s. Tottenham isn’t just where I live, its where I’ve put down roots.

Ruairidh Paton

Ruairidh will fight for:

  • More affordable housing, and campaigning for rent controls
  • Improving our parks and public spaces
  • Ending the council’s financial ties with arms companies
  • Supporting residents with the spiralling costs of bills and food

But if we’re to win this, we need as many Greens as we can out doorknocking and delivering leaflets to show that Greens can win, and Ruairidh is the best choice for St Ann’s.  Labour have already mobilised quickly, with many of their 45 councillors on the doorsteps.

Can you help us?

If you have never doorknocked before or are new to the Green Party, no worries. We’ll have a brief training when you arrive and you’ll be paired with someone more experienced than you.

We’ll be out every week & weekend until the 10th of April – here are the upcoming opportunities to get involved

You can get involved and find out more right now by signing up to one of the upcoming doorknocking events below and joining our campaign Whatsapp group.

Thank you for your support!

Colin & Pamela

Thank you to everyone who voted for us in the most recent elections on 2nd May. Together we equalled our best result ever and re-elected three Green London Assembly members. In Haringey and Enfield we increased our vote share to 16%.

In the local elections in the rest of the country, the Greens won our greatest ever number of council seats.

We now have more than 800 councillors, nationwide, and are the largest party in Bristol, Stroud and Hastings.
Sadiq Khan has won a third term as Mayor of London and Green Assembly members will working hard to hold him to account. There are many of his promises they will be focused on: from acting on the climate emergency, to building 40,000 new council homes and making public transport more affordable.
